During the creation of a watch brand, the most exciting and nerve-wracking part is converting the creative ideas in your mind into real products on the production line.
As FOKSY factory, which has been deeply engaged in the watch manufacturing line for many years, today we stand in the professional perspective of the supply chain and disintegrate for you: how should the brand owners negotiate efficiently with the watch factory and successfully finalize the watch design that is both aesthetic and feasible for mass production?
Many novice brand owners make the wrong first step in their approach -- they send the factory a few online renderings of a big brand, or a simple hand-drawn concept map, and then ask, "Can this be done? How much will it cost?" This kind of vague communication is not only very inefficient, but also easy to make the factory feel that the brand is unprofessional, so as to give a conservative, high tentative offer.
To get the factory to take your project seriously, you need to prepare a Product Requirements Document (PRD) or Tech Pack:
Don't just give a 45 degree perspective, the factory needs to see the front view, side view and bottom cover and clearly mark your hard size requirements:
• Watch case diameter: For example, 40mm (excluding crown).
• Watch case thickness: This directly determines what level of movement can be accommodated.
• Ear spacing: Determines the width of the strap (such as 20mm) and the fit when worn.
Clearly note your expectations for the core components on the drawing:
• Case: 316L stainless steel (mirror polished/brushed alternating process)
• Watch crystal: Sapphire glass (whether anti-reflective coating is needed)
• Literal: Sunray shading + Apply Indices
• Glow-in-the-dark: Super-LumiNova BGW9 Glow-in-the-dark coating (if required)
When you submit the design to the factory, the real game begins. Reliable factories (such as FOKSY) will organize structural engineers to conduct DFM (Design for manufacturability) assessments. At this stage, you learn to understand the subtext of the factory and make smart decisions.
• The logic behind: the thickness of the watch is determined by the mirror + pointer safety clearance (needle swing space) + movement thickness + bottom cover thickness. If you choose a 4.5mm thick automatic mechanical movement, but the thickness of the whole watch is only 8mm, this is physically impossible.
• Your communication strategy: Clearly set your top priority. If the extreme ultra-thin is your brand selling point, then the initiative to compromise the factory, the mechanical movement into a high-precision quartz movement;
• The underlying logic: Circular watches are the easiest to waterproof because the circular silicone ring is evenly stressed. If your design is pillow-shaped, octagonal, or irregular, the waterproof difficulty will increase exponentially.
• Your communication strategy: Ask the factory, "Which part of the structure do you need to adjust to achieve 5ATM waterproofing if you want to maintain this appearance?" Usually, the factory will suggest fine-tuning the anti-sink wiring inside the case, or increase the number of screws in the bottom cover, the brand should not destroy the core vision of the appearance of the premise, listen to the factory on the structural safety advice.
When the two sides reach a preliminary consensus, the clock structure engineer of the factory will issue a CAD structural engineering drawing, which is the most important piece of paper in the process of determining the design. Once signed, the subsequent mold opening will be based on this.
In FOKSY, when our engineers draw proofing drawings, they will take into account the machine tolerance and the thickness of the electroplating layer in mass production. For example, if the reserved hole position of the literal nail is too dead, the master can manually fine-tune it with the file at the sample stage. but on the assembly line of thousands of pieces, even a small error can cause the letter nails to be skewed or not fit.
Before the mass production line is fully launched, we will make the pre-production sample in strict accordance with the mass production process flow. After receiving this sample, the brand should cooperate with the factory to complete the following mass goods considerations: color consistency, supply chain stability, mass production test, etc., so as to make the best decision for the mass order.
If you are preparing to build your own watch brand and have a design sketch but don't know how to implement it; or if you are worried about the quality gap between the sample and the mass production, please contact us. FOKSY's professional team will provide you with full link support from design evaluation, 3D assembly simulation to pre-production sample proofing and flexible mass production.
